By adding thousands of dots together and using specific color combinations, a meditative experience is presented to the viewer. Oishi’s work is created using paint on the eraser side of a #2 pencil in a deliberate, pointillist approach. The choice of a tool that is traditionally used to remove is particularly poignant as the circular patterns awaken a sense of awareness and moments of pause.

BIOGRAPHY

A.J. Oishi (b.1971) is a self-taught painter specializing in abstract pointillism. Originally from Seattle, Oishi spent her professional career working in roles that required organization and precise analysis. These skills transferred into her painting career, in which measured and controlled techniques are applied to create balanced and detail-oriented paintings.

Rooted in a fascination with color, geometry, and the artistic process, Oishi’s work is created using paint on the eraser side of a #2 pencil in a deliberate, pointillist approach. By adding thousands of dots together and using specific color combinations, a meditative experience is presented to the viewer. The choice of a tool which is traditionally used to remove something is particularly poignant as the circular patterns awaken a sense of awareness and moments of pause. There is an intoxicating effect in the presence of these forms, drawing the viewer in for periods of respite.

In her most recent work, Oishi has begun breaking up her circular patterns. This new non-standard shape that remains allows Oishi to explore the arrangement of her mark and push the boundaries of traditional structures thus opening up the viewer to a new sense of curiosity and awareness.

Oishi has enjoyed participating in shows in San Francisco, New York, Miami, Vancouver, and Boston, and is represented by several fine art galleries throughout North America. Her work can be found in several private and corporate art collections.

Oishi currently works and resides with her husband and three daughters in Columbus, Ohio.

ABOUT THE EMIKO COLLECTION

Oishi consistently pursues education, knowledge and wisdom that allows for continual self-growth. Emiko, “the blessed child”, is a collection that Oishi created during a period of observed growth, independence and admiration for her 2nd child, Lily Emiko. In this exhibition, Oishi seeks to inspire positivity and optimism and to ultimately translate these emotions to the viewer.
